RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Eric Smith.
Smith was not that impressive for the Jets last year, but he lacks any obvious competition for his starting role and should remain relevant in IDP leagues after posting 89 tackles (66 solo), 2.5 sacks and an interception as a 14-game starter last year. He is purely an in-the-box sort of safety whose style of play lends itself to reliable tackle totals, even if his upside is rather muted. As long as the Jets don't add competition for Smith, he should be a solid IDP backup in 2012.
Smith looks to be the starter opposite Jim Leonhard at the start of the season.
In the mix as a reserve/special teamer for the Jets now that Jim Leonhard has assumed the starting strong safety gig.
Smith will back up Kerry Rhodes at strong safety and help out on special teams.
