RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

There was no outlook written for JaMarcus Russell.

2009

We want to believe. The best evidence for it is his last three games of Ď08: six TDs against just two picks and QB ratings of 86, 128 and 99 Ė all against teams playing well at the time (New England, Houston and Tampa Bay). Most important, the Raiders scored 84 points those three games (two wins). A 77 QB rating is below average, but a sign of hope considering Russellís lack of playing experience even as a collegian. Ditto the 6.6 YPA. And he was 7.0 or better in five of his last seven games. Donít worry about Jeff Garcia, who plays over the strong-armed Russell barring injury only over Al Davisís dead body. The offensive line jelled at the end of the year, especially in the running game, once the awful Kwame Harris was replaced by Mario Henderson. But RT Cornell Green allowed 7.5 sacks and committed eight penalties. The Raiders didnít draft a solution and will instead look to free agent Khalif Barnes, who has been a disaster himself (for the Jaguars) since his rookie year. The wide receivers are fast but lack professionalism and consistency that an inexperienced QB desperately needs. Javon Walker will be asked to provide that, and who can count on him at this point? Rookies Darrius Heyward-Bey and Louis Murphy are also fast, but raw. Remember, Heyward-Bey didnít make many plays in college. Russell gets system continuity now, for now, with Tom Cable, a former OC at UCLA and O-Line coach last year before the mid-season promotion to head coach. Russell is an interesting, developing player and a safe sleeper (considering where youíll be able to draft him) in í09.

2008

Russell's still a project, but he clearly has size and arm stength. The Raiders upgraded their receiving corps with the addition of Javon Walker. Ronald Curry is a capable No. 2 receiver, and Drew Carter (formerly of Carolina) has size and speed. Ideally, Darren McFadden will become Adrian Peterson-ish and force defenses to put an eighth defender in the box. That will make the reads a lot easier for Russell, who will need all the help he can get given his lack of experience. In the late rounds of the draft, you reach for upside. Until he proves otherwise, we have to trust the scouts and GMs who thought so highly of Russell as a legitimate No. 1 overall pick and gamble that he quickly develops. But given the dedication that Michael Bush showed in rehabbing his broken leg and staying in top shape, and the emergence of Justin Fargas, Oakland more badly needed to upgrade its offensive line, which was terrible last year in protecting the passer Ė 27th in sack rate. Oakland didnít even draft a lineman, though many mocks had them taking an offensive tackle fourth overall to address a glaring need.

2007

He throws the football 84 yards in the air! Why do NFL executives seem to approach scouting QBs with the sophistication of high school cheerleaders at their first varsity game? Is it any wonder these guys are so bad at figuring out which prospects are going to be the best QBs? And Russell might end up being great. We have no idea. But if he does end up being great, it will have very little and perhaps nothing to do with how far he can throw a football. The Raiders offense last year was as big an embarrassment as we can remember. The coaches were dinosaurs, but the personnel was obviously a big problem, too. Randy Moss was a zero last year, but losing him doesnít help. Russell will likely start very soon if not right out of the shoot, as Andrew Walter is nearly as green and Josh McCown also a project after being acquired from the Lions as a throw-in in the Mike Williams trade. Despite his Culpepper-like size, Russell is not remotely a scrambler (averaged a half a yard on 139 rushing attempts for LSU).
