ANALYSIS
This may have been one of the better opportunities the former first-rounder could have to get some decent playing time, especially following the trade of Lee Evans, but injuries and an inability to translate his fine athleticism to the field continue to plague him. That's two fails in his career, and there might not be much room left for him to get over the hump.

Davis signed as a free agent with the Bills in August. He really tanked as a first-round pick for the Chargers, but some of the Buffalo brass used to operate there and are probably well familiar with his strong athleticism. No word yet on where he slots into a deep receiving corps, but assuming the price was cheap, this was worth a dart for an offense that is committed to open it up for Ryan Fitzpatrick. With Lee Evans getting dealt in August, there's some opportunity here for Davis to win the No. 2 or No. 4 role if he can prove he's past the injury bug and previous disappointments. UPDATE: Davis was cut by the Bills in September of 2011 following an injury-plagued preseason and not being able to wow the coaching staff when he was healthy.
Davis would typically be about third or fourth on the depth chart, but the uncertainty surrounding Vincent Jackson has created an opportunity for Davis to finally drop the first-round-bust title from his name. Davis is in good physical shape heading into the season for the first time in his career, and he's been getting a lot of good work in during the offseason, so he seems likely to carve out some significant playing time if Jackson misses time or is dealt before the season begins. Once upon a time, the Bolts were very high on Davis' speed, so this is a very interesting situation to monitor during camp.
Davis enters his third season buried behind four or maybe even five other receivers on San Diego's depth chart. Thus far the former first round pick's career has been derailed by injuries, so this season could be his last chance to make a name for himself in the league. He had four catches for 59 yards in 2008 before going on injured reserve, and in his rookie season he was bothered by a number of minor injuries and managed only 20 receptions for 188 yards.
Davis made only 20 receptions for 188 yards in his rookie season, but he is in line to be the number three wide receiver heading into 2008. The Chargers like his down-field speed, and he should benefit from the fact that opposing defenses will certainly be focused on San Diego's various other weapons when he's on the field.
The Chargers drafted Davis in the hopes that he would give them the legitimate deep threat that they have lacked for the last several years. He has the speed and hands to be a big run-after-the catch guy and should see plenty of action as a rookie with an outside chance to start if he can supplant the veteran Eric Parker.
