Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)Given that he was previously locked in for about $10.5 million under the franchise tag, this signing will definitely save the Panthers some cap space, lowering the dollar figures in exchange for the long-term security. Kalil is an elite center and one of the main reasons why the Carolina offensive line is potentially one of the league's best (pending the health of Jeff Otah's knee, at least). Assuming the five-year extension is based on the already-signed franchise tender, this should be a six-year deal.
RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
Will start at center.
Will be the starting center.
One of six Pro Bowlers left on Carolina's revamped roster, Kalil is a proven starter who will anchor the Panthers' offensive line.
Kalil started three games for the Panthers as a rookie in 2007, but he'll enter the 2008 season as the team's starting center after being selected by the Panthers as a second-round pick in 2007.
Kalil will compete for the starting center job during training camp.
