RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
Merling will provide depth on the defensive line for the Packers in 2012.
Merling was a non-factor last season after suffering an Achilles injury. At his best he is a big body along the defensive line who ties up blockers and can push the offensive line into the backfield on passing plays.
Merling was arrested on aggravated batterly charges in May and could have suspension problems with the NFL once those charges are resolved. If he remains on the roster this season he will be one of a host of ends who will be in some kind of defensive line rotation.
Merling should be the Dolphins starting Right Defensive End and should be able to get a handful of sacks, but in a 3-4 defense, defensive ends aren't the best bet for your IDP.
Merling will play on the left side of the defensive line and may eventually be groomed as Jason Taylor's replacement at the hybrid linebacker role. In 2008, he should see plenty of action as part of a steady rotation, so count on him for a handful of sacks, but nothing to warrant your immediate consideration.
