The tight end position is a crap-shoot for the Bills right now, and they don't rely too heavily on the tight end in the passing game anyway. The competition is between Scott Chandler, Nelson, David Martin and Mike Caussin for roster spots and playing time. Nelson probably has the most fantasy value of that group, but we could also see a situation where Chandler wins the starting job, and Nelson is used as a second tight end and occasional wideout. That puts him deep on the radar, but we're also not expecting all that much from a guy who hasn't done anything in the league yet, coupled with an offense that typically features the TE last. UPDATE: Nelson was released in the September cutdown, and at best will hook on with another team as a depth tight end.
Nelson made a nice impression on the new coaching staff during the offseason, a time when fellow tight end Derek Schouman was working his way back from injury. The Buffalo tight end situation comes with the usual "beware of alligators" warning, but if Nelson can win the No. 1 job outright, he's worth looking at in deeper leagues because the Bills may need to rely on the tight end more this season due to a lack of experience at WR. Nelson's best skill has always been catching the ball, and he's a big target at 6-5, 240.
Nelson is an intriguing rookie to watch this season. He posted the second-fastest 40-yard dash (4.56) among tight ends at the Combine, and should eventually earn the starting spot in Buffalo. That may not happen this year, as at best he'll work himself into a rotation with Derek Schouman and Derek Fine. The knock on Nelson is his strength (only 19 reps for the 225-pound bench press at the Combine), something that will be addressed before the season begins. For now, the team is letting him get his reps strictly as a pass-catcher, meaning it's doubtful he has a chance at a starting role until 2010.
