Although he's a former undrafted rookie who's paid his dues on the practice squad and the bottom of the New Orleans depth chart since 2009, it's still a little surprising that Daniel didn't land with a team where he can compete for a starting role. He'll back up Alex Smith with the Chiefs.

Daniel suffered a hairline fracture of his right thumb and will be held out of practice for about two and a half weeks, wwl.com reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Surgery will not be required to repair his thumb and Daniel should be ready next month when training camp begins. With Drew Brees still away from the Saints due to contract issues, Sean Canfield and Luke McCown are the team's current QB options for their current OTAs. Suffice to say, from the Saints' perspective, Brees' contract saga can't end soon enough.
Daniel agreed to a one-year deal with the Saints on Monday, NewOrleansSaints.com reports.

RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

Subscribe now to see our 2014 outlook.

2013

Daniel is unlikely to see the field in 2013, barring an injury to starter Alex Smith.

2012

Daniel is expected to back up Drew Brees at quarterback with the Saints.

2011

Daniel will enter the year as the backup at quarterback to Drew Brees. Daniel has only attempted three career passes so the Saints hope for nothing but health for Brees.

2010

Daniel will compete with Sean Canfield for the Saints backup quarterback position behind Drew Brees. The team is also looking to sign a veteran quarterback before training camp begins to join the competition.

2009

For Daniel to stick to the Washington roster he needs to beat out Colt Brennan or hope Colt Brennan beats out Todd Collins. If Collins wins the 2nd string job, Daniel would need to beat Brennan for the 3rd spot. However, as 14-year veteran, Collins would be too expensive to keep as a 3rd stringer in the event that Brennan wins the 2nd string job, opening the way for the cheaper Daniel to take the 3rd spot. Collins and Brennan already have their feet in the door, however, so Washington might try to sneak the undrafted Daniel to the practice squad.
