Unsigned while rehabbing injury

Knee
March 19, 2017
Smith (knee) remains unsigned while rehabbing from a season-ending injury, Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Smith had some success as an occasional big-play threat for the Falcons in 2013 and 2014, but a combination of injuries and age have sapped his explosiveness. Even if he returns to full health at some point this offseason, the 31-year-old may find it tough to catch on with a team that gives him a real shot to earn a roster spot. He had 10 carries for 47 yards and six catches for 77 yards in three games with Tampa Bay last season.

Smith shined in a very limited role last season, averaging over 6.0 yards per carry on 23 attempts. The seventh-year back was also a surprise catching the ball out of the backfield, averaging more than 17.0 yards per catch, but those numbers were inflated after he took a few short passes to the house. The departures of Steven Jackson and Jacquizz Rodgers cleared out some of Smith’s competition, but he’s still projected to start the season behind Devonta Freeman and rookie Tevin Coleman on the depth chart. If he can produce like he did last season, he should earn more work out of the backfield, but it’s unlikely he’ll win the starting gig barring an injury.
Smith will battle with newcomer Devonta Freeman for the #3 spot in the Falcons' pecking order behind #2 Jacquizz Rodgers and #1 Steven Jackson.
Smith will provide depth at running back in 2013.
Smith will provide depth at tailback for the Falcons this season. He's deep on the depth chart, so his value is extremely limited.
Smith notched one carry last season and lost three yards on the play. With three backs ahead of him on the depth chart, even less is guaranteed in 2011.
Smith won't see many chances behind Michael Turner, Jason Snelling and Jerious Norwood.
