RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Russell Allen.
Previously little more than a backup in Jacksonville, Allen found himself in a three-down role in 2012 due to a groin injury suffered by previous top Jacksonville linebacker Daryl Smith. Allen was an IDP hit from that point, as he finished the year with 129 tackles (105 solo) while playing 1,003 snaps on defense for the Jaguars. His talent level is well below that of Posluszny, but Allen made an impact as a run defender by making 8.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Allen should reprise the same role in 2013, because his competition for snaps is Geno Hayes, a player who barely saw the field for Chicago in 2012.
Allen, a career backup to date, stepped into a starting role last season after Clint Session was placed on injured reserve. While Allen's performance is by no means spectacular, he's more than capable of coming in off the bench and providing the Jags with solid, reliable linebacker play. There's a feeling around the organization that Allen could assume a larger role this season, especially if the injury bug bites the LB corps again.
Allen will compete for a starting linebacker spot after a promising end to the 2009 season. If he earns the starting spot, Allen could rack up tackle numbers.
