Because new coach John Fox maintains it will be an open competition, Clausen is technically in contention for the starting job. But looking at the salary and talent level of both players, this seems m...

Jimmy Clausen: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

The Baltimore Sun relays that Clausen's teammate, Ryan Mallett, is expected to start Sunday's game against the Steelers.

Clausen completed 26 of 45 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's blowout loss to the Chiefs. He also gained 30 yards on five carries.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The veteran had his most productive game of the season as the Ravens played catch up, although his numbers were padded a bit by a successful Hail Mary as time expired in the first half. Clausen appears to be the man in line to finish out the season at the helm in Baltimore, and he has proven capable of leading the offense against a couple of tough opponents over the last two weeks. That being said, there will be some tough times on a team devoid of elite playmakers, and Clausen will be a risky fantasy option next week against the Steelers.

Though Matt Schaub is in uniform Sunday, the Baltimore Sun indicates that it's still unclear if he or Clausen will start the contest. That said, based on pre-game warm-ups, it looks like Clausen is in line to draw the assignment.

Clausen completed 23-of-40 passes for 274 yards and an interception in Sunday's loss to Seattle.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

The veteran has been unfortunate enough to make both of his starts against the Seahawks this season, and although he posted a much better yardage total this time around, he was held out of the end zone once again Sunday. Matt Schaub is out indeffinitely with a chest injury, and Clausen figures to start under center until the former returns. If Schaub sits out again next week against the Chiefs, Clausen would finally get to face a team other than Seattle, but he would still carry very little fantasy upside.
With Matt Schaub inactive, Clausen will start Sunday's game against the Seahawks.

Clausen is expected to start Sunday against the Seahawks in place of the injured Matt Schaub (chest), according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Bryn Renner is expected to be the backup, though ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that it's still possible that Schaub could be the No. 2. Either way, Clausen will be under center against a Seahawks defense that hasn't been nearly as dominant this season, though with so few healthy skill players in Baltimore, Clausen will have his work cut out for him.
Clausen's teammate Matt Schaub (chest) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports.

2015

2014

Though he hasn't taken an NFL snap since his rookie season of 2010, Clausen impressed the coaching staff during the Bears' June minicamp and was signed to a contract. He sustained his success in training camp, ultimately beating out Jordan Palmer for the top backup job behind Jay Cutler. Considering the occasional fragility Cutler has shown during his tenure in Chicago, it wouldn't be a surprise if Clausen saw some extended game action at some point this season.

2013

Competed with Derek Anderson to be Cam Newton's backup this season before being cut.

2012

Has no shot at a starting job and will compete with Derek Anderson for the backup role behind Cam Newton.

2011

Clausen was quite bad as a rookie, and, frankly, didnít give any reason for optimism. He has a good shot of heading into autumn as Carolinaís default starter, however, because Cam Newton figures to be very raw coming out of Auburn. Still, itís tough to see the Panthers enduring 16 more games of what Clausen had to offer a year ago, so he either needs to improve a great deal or get ready to see the bench a couple months into the year. The Panthers also brought in veteran Derek Anderson, but it would be tough to see a situation where Clausen struggles and the team goes to Anderson instead of Newton.

2010

Carolina's first pick in the 2010 draft, Clausen is a potential steal as the Panthers were able to land him in the second round. He is widely considered to be one of the most NFL-ready quarterbacks, having studied under Charlie Weis' offense at Notre Dame, which is similar to the offense used in Carolina. However, he has been criticized for a lack of leadership and for not having a strong work ethic in the film room. Criticism aside, he is definitely considered the QB of the future for Carolina, and could be handed the starting job this season if Matt Moore struggles early.
