Colt McCoy: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Washington is planning to start McCoy over Robert Griffin III on Sunday at Indianapolis, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

According to Schefter's report, the change may not be long-lasting, but the team views McCoy as a short-term upgrade after Griffin struggled against San Francisco last week. The 28-year-old has completed 85.7 percent of his passes (36 of 42) in two games this season, compiling 427 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and another score on the ground. Washington is 2-0 in the two games in which he's played, but he will have a tall task trying to match points with Andrew Luck and the Colts this week.
As expected, Robert Griffin III will start Sunday against the Vikings, with McCoy serving as the backup.

2014

2013

McCoy is expected to back up Colin Kaepernick in 2013 and is unlikely to see the field, barring an injury to Kaepernick.

2012

Outside of two shocking victories over the Patriots and Saints in his rookie season, McCoy's first two years have been tough sledding. He's thrown for 4,309 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions in 21 games with a 74.5 rating. Heading into the 2012 season the Browns organization has vowed to give McCoy a chance to compete for the starting job with rookie first-round selection Brandon Weeden, but he doesn't figure to win that battle, or last long if he gets the first crack. There is a possibility he ends up in another city by opening day, but it would likely be in a backup roll.

2011

While he was promising as a rookie, the short term doesn’t look to be especially favorable to McCoy’s fantasy prospects. The Browns declined to add Alabama wideout Julio Jones in the draft, opting for Atlanta’s trade offer instead, leaving McCoy again with what figures to be one of the worst wideout lineups in the league. To leave McCoy less vulnerable from his lack of targets, look for Cleveland to run Peyton Hillis and Montario Hardesty often. If McCoy doesn’t have his opportunities limited by a run-heavy offense, his accuracy as a passer and ability to run make him worth monitoring.

2010

McCoy was taken in the third round of this year's draft and is seen as a project for team president Mike Holmgren (see Joe Montana, Steve Young, Brett Favre and Matt Hasselbeck). If he sees playing time this season, it will likely be after injuries plague Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace as McCoy is seen as a commodity to be groomed before being thrown into the fire. It will be fun to track his progress down the road, but this year he will spend the bulk of his time on the sidelines watching and waiting for his opportunities to come down the road.
