Dixon will be the starting running back Sunday against the Jets.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Dixon gets the call, after C.J. Spiller (collarbone) and Fred Jackson (groin) suffered injuries last Sunday against the Vikings that will keep them each out for a number of weeks. Dixon will get the first crack at carries ahead of Bryce Brown, who is active for the first time this season, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the team employed a bit of a time-share, similar to what they’ve been doing with Spiller and Jackson.
During the media access portion of practice Wednesday, which ESPN's Mike Rodak noted is "essentially just warm-up drills," Dixon lined up with the Bills' first-team, along with starting QB Kyle Orton. Meanwhile, fellow RB Bryce Brown, who has yet to see a regular season snap to date, lined up with EJ Manuel and the second-team offense.

RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2014

Subscribe now to see our 2014 outlook.

2013

Dixon will compete for a back-up running back job but should really make the team because of his special teams play and his ability to mentor young players. He has averaged fewer than 30 carries and 90 yards in each of his last two seasons and shouldn't be counted on for much more heading into 2013.

2011

Dixon split backup duties with Brian Westbrook last year, but when Frank Gore went down with a season-ending hip injury, the 31-year-old veteran outplayed him. Dixon got just 3.4 YPC, and his running style is best described as plodding. Westbrook isn’t going to return to San Francisco, but the team drafted Kendall Hunter in the fourth round, and GM Trent Baalke has already declared him the No. 2 back, rendering Dixon nothing more than San Francisco’s RB3.

2010

Dixon showed up to offseason OTA workouts slightly out of shape and missed practice time due to a hamstring injury. He didn't give off the best first impression, but he's still expected to battle with Glen Coffee for the number two running back job during training camp. Even if Dixon is relegated to third-string, he could end up in the mix for short-yardage carries.
