The Lions released Quarless on Monday.
ANALYSIS
Quarless signed with the Lions after spending his first six seasons with the Packers. Detroit was looking for tight end depth at the time but appear content with the position at the moment . The timing of the release is curious considering the 27-year-old just completed a two-game suspension to start the season.

The uninspiring Quarless was expected to be the fourth option in the passing game last year, but he couldn't even manage that. He split time with rookie Richard Rodgers and ended up being used primarily to block. He had only three games with more than 35 yards receiving and six games with no more than 10 yards, twice being shut out. His best chance to make an impact is in the red zone where he saw nearly half (13) of his targets last season and scored all three of his touchdowns. At 6-4, 252, with 4.68 speed, Quarless should have more upside. But with one of the league's best WR duos in Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, the emergence of Davante Adams and pass-catching running back Eddie Lacy, there aren't enough targets left for Quarless, who likely again will split time with Rodgers, if he's not overtaken.
Quarless became the No. 1 tight end last season when Jermichael Finley suffered a season-ending neck injury in Week 7, but he did not play a significant role in the passing game. Prorating Weeks 8-16 over 16 games gives him just 70 targets. He averaged a paltry 5.9 yards per target and 9.8 yards per catch. Quarless has 4.68 speed, and at 6-4, 252, perhaps he can make a bigger impact in the red zone with a full season (six targets last season). A full season of Aaron Rodgers will help too after they played just two games together last year. Finley, who has yet to be medically cleared, is not expected back, leaving Quarless with little competition for tight-end targets. The Packers drafted Richard Rodgers in the third round, but he's a project and likely won't push Quarless this year. Even so, Quarless is no better than the fourth option in the passing game.
Quarless will battle for back-up playing time at tight end behind starter Jermichael Finley.
Quarless is recovering from a knee injury suffered in December of 2012. When he is fully healed he will provide depth at tight end for the Packers.
Quarless took over as the starting tight end last season when Jermichael Finely went down, but the Packers picked two tight ends in this year's draft, which means Quarless will really have to fight for his roster spot.
Quarles was taken in the fifth round of the 2010 draft and will compete for a backup tight end spot.
