RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks
There was no outlook written for Austen Lane.
Signed by the Bears this offseason at the recommendation of defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, a previous coach of his in Jacksonville, Lane will compete for a depth role along the defensive line. Though he totaled three sacks and 64 tackles over parts of four seasons in the NFL, Lane's minimal impact in the preseason ultimately contributed to his release by the Bears at the end of training camp.
Lane was signed to provide depth along the defensive line after Jacksonville released him prior to training camp.
Lane has been a training camp star for the past couple of seasons, but has yet to see that productivity really translate to gameday. The addition of second-round draft pick Andre Branch should only up the pressure on Lane, who's fast running out of time to prove he's worth more than a rotational role with the defense.
Lane will serve as a backup defensive end.
