Jeff Cumberland: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Cumberland (Achilles) missed Monday's practice, NJ.com reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Cumberland exited last Tuesday's practice with soreness in his Achilles tendon and has not practiced or played since. While his condition isn't considered serious, Cumberland had surgery on his other Achilles back in 2011, so the tight end is certainly wary of coming back too early. Fortunately, Cumberland returned to positional drills Tuesday and figures to reassume the Jets' starting tight end position ahead of rookie Jace Amaro.
Cumberland is dealing with a minor Achilles' injury, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Coach Rex Ryan believes that Cumberland should be able to play against Bengals in Saturday's preseason contest, though the tight end's fantasy upside is hampered by the Jets' addition of second-round draft choice Jace Amaro.

Cumberland agreed to a new deal with the Jets on Friday, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

This seems like a practical move on the Jets' part, because while Cumberland isn't an elite talent, he was the most productive player at the position for New York last season despite seeing seven fewer targets than Kellen Winslow. Winslow's future with the team is uncertain, and if he leaves, Cumberland's role could grow significantly in 2014. That is, assuming the Jets don't go after a tight end early in the draft.
Cumberland finished the 2013 season with 26 catches, 398 yards and four touchdowns.

2014

2013

Normally it would be impressive for a tight end to be second on his team in receptions and receiving yards and tied for its most receiving touchdowns. Unless he's on the Jets. Cumberland ended the season with 29 grabs for 359 yards and three touchdowns while playing in place of the injured Dustin Keller. Now sitting atop the Jets' depth chart after Keller left for Miami, Cumberland should be more involved in the offense. Cumberland is quick off the line and has improved his blocking since coming into the league. The Jets signed Kellen Winslow just before press time, and the veteran, who saw only four offensive snaps last year, will compete with Cumberland for playing time in training camp.

2012

Cumberland, now healed from a torn Achilles, will vie for his previous spot as the top backup to Dustin Keller in training camp.

2011

Will compete with Keith Zinger for backup tight end duties
