Alexander announced Monday that he intends to retire from the NFL, Leo Roth and Ryan Miller of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle report.
ANALYSIS
Alexander will continue to start in Buffalo's linebacker corps during the team's playoff run, but he won't return for the 2020 season. The veteran linebacker recorded 55 tackles (35 solo), two sacks and nine defended passes across 16 regular-season contests in 2019, and he'll now turn his attention to Saturday's wild-card matchup against the Texans.

Though Alexander turns 36 at the end of May, the linebacker's play has yet to taper off. The 6-1, 245-pounder recorded 68 tackles, 6.5 sacks, two interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 2018 and the Bills could really use his veteran leadership with defensive tackle Kyle Williams having retired. Alexander had some big IDP performances down the stretch last season after Matt Milano suffered a broken leg, though he'll likely take on a more restricted play count when the linebacking corps is at full strength. The Bills have preferred to use Alexander in a hybrid role that creates opportunities for him to rush the passer.
Alexander couldn't keep the pace up from his surprising breakout season in 2016, but he still drastically outproduced his career averages. And, if you look at total tackles only, the 35-year-old's number last year of 73 was remarkably close to his mark of 76 the prior year. However, his sack total dropped for 12.5 to three, which caused his IDP value to plummet.
Alexander is coming off an unexpectedly productive season where he posted 76 tackles and 12.5 sacks, which was a surprise considering the 33-year-old never had more than 2.5 in any of his previous nine NFL seasons. However, we believe this was a confluence of good fortune, as Alexander thrived in Rex Ryan's defense and the role he was perfectly suited for. With some younger Bills about to get more playing time and with Ryan ousted, Alexander's role figures to be different this coming season.
After spending his first two seasons in Arizona playing primarily special teams, Alexander entered training camp at the top of the Cardinals' depth chart at weak-side linebacker. However, he slowly fell out of favor and found himself on the chopping block at the first cut-down date. If he lands elsewhere, the 32-year-old will likely hold down a specials-teams gig yet again.
Backup linebacker and special teams leader.
Alexander had his best season as a pro in 2010. He recorded 57 tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble. He took over the starting outside linebacker job when Andre Carter proved ineffective. Alexander is expected to play outside linebacker again and should improve on his numbers.
