Ryan Mallett: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Mallett's season is over after he suffered a torn right pectoral muscle in Sunday's loss to the Bengals, ESPN.com reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

It's a tough break for Mallett in his second start for the Texans. Currently in the last year of his rookie deal, the quarterback -- who is in line to undergo surgery -- is slated to hit free agency this offseason, so it's possible that Sunday's contest may be his last one in a Houston uniform. In Mallett's absence, look for Ryan Fitzpatrick to return as the Texans' starter at QB on Sunday against the Titans.
Mallett played through a right pectoral injury during Sunday's loss to the Bengals and may need to miss multiple games, The Houston Chronicle reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Mallett is scheduled for an MRI on Monday, at which point there should be an update on his health. His second start went much worse than his first, with Mallett completing just 21-of-45 passes for 189 yards in a 22-13 loss. If Mallett can't play against the Titans next week, Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely get the start over rookie fourth-rounder Tom Savage.

Mallett will replace Ryan Fitzpatrick as the Texans' starting quarterback when the team returns to action against the Browns on Nov. 16, the team's official site reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Per the Houston Chronicle, coach Bill O'Brien indicated that Mallett will be given a full shot to hold on the the starting assignment, with Fitzpatrick slated to serve as the team's top backup, and Tom Savage as the No. 3 QB. Mallett thus merits a speculative add for those looking to add QB depth, with his strong arm and the presence of wideouts Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins providing the signal-caller with some intriguing fantasy potential in Week 11, and beyond.
Head coach Bill O'Brien said he's considering a quarterback change, replacing starter Ryan Fitzpatrick with Mallet, the Houston Chronicle reports. The coach said Monday that the offense needs a "spark" and that he's evaluating everything, including the quarterback position.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

O'Brien praised Mallett's work ethic and his knowledge of the offense after nine weeks of practice. "In practice which is totally different than in a game but in practice (Mallett) seems to have good command of what we're doing and he's come in here with good knowledge of the offense," O'Brien said. "He's been in this system for a while now and he knows the system and he's worked extremely hard in practice." Houston is entering its bye week, which would give O'Brien a couple of weeks to prepare Mallett before the team's next game against Cleveland in Week 11.
Mallett will get work during practice this week leading up to Sunday's game against Tennessee, but head coach Bill O'Brien is still behind Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team's starting quarterback, the Houston Chronicle reports. "We're going to continue to work with both of these guys in practice, and we'll see how it improves," O'Brien said.

2014

2013

Mallett only holds value in dynasty leagues, as he is expected to back up Tom Brady in 2013. Tim Tebow is also in the team's backup QB mix, but Mallett is aided in that regard by the fact that he has superior arm strength.

2012

The strong-armed Mallett remains behind Brian Hoyer on the Patriots' QB depth chart, but Hoyer in line to become a free agent next year. There is is the possibility that if another team dazzles New England with an offer, the lure of acquiring a valuable asset could conceivably be enough for the team to part with either QB.

2011

Look for Mallett's character concerns to subside in the coming months as he gets up to speed on the Patriot Way and he quietly learns the NFL ropes as an understudy to star QB Tom Brady. Mallett has plenty of detractors, but with no pressure to step in and rescue a franchise, he'll have time to round out his game, which has holes, at the pro level. Already blessed with great size and a cannon arm, Mallett would do well to mimic Brady's ability to sidestep pressure and make the correct reads. Easier said than done, but our view is that New England is a great landing spot for him, where he will either give the Patriots a talented insurance policy for Brady or perhaps serve as trade bait once the grooming process is complete.
