Mallett appeared in just two games in 2017, completing nine of 16 passes for 56 yards and two touchdowns.
ANALYSIS
The two times Mallett was called upon were in extraordinary circumstances: The first came when Baltimore was trailing by a significant margin in a loss to the Jaguars, and the second occurred when starter Joe Flacco was knocked out of Baltimore's win over Miami. He looked competent against the Jaguars, but the garbage time wrinkle makes it tough to extrapolate much from that performance. His role after taking over for Flacco against the Dolphins was primarily to hand off the ball with the Ravens in run-out-the-clock mode. Looking ahead, Mallett is set to hit free agency this offseason and it's unclear whether Baltimore is interested in bringing him back or going in another direction at the backup quarterback spot. It's worth noting that the Ravens could get out of their deal with Flacco after the 2019 season, which opens the possibility of the team spending a draft pick on a developmental signal caller for the future instead of bringing back a pricier veteran such as Mallett. In any case, Mallett's outlook for 2018 will be inking a deal as a backup.

Joe Flacco managed to start all 16 games this past season despite being less than a year removed from a torn ACL. With that, Mallett saw his role get significantly dialed back as he attempted just six passes while appearing in parts of four games. Mallett (6-6, 250) will have his value tied to Flacco's health once again this season. He did show some promise during his two-game stint as a starter late in 2015, most notably leading the Ravens to a win over the Steelers. Mallett has the experience and baseline talent to be a serviceable backup, but there's very little reason to believe he'll see any sort of significant playing time this year as long as Flacco remains healthy.
Mallett opened 2015 with the Texans and replaced Brian Hoyer as the starter by Week 2, but Hoyer then won the job back for Week 6, much to his teammate's chagrin. Making no effort to hide his displeasure, Mallet missed a team flight and was subsequently released, eventually landing with the Ravens in mid-December. He ended up starting Weeks 16 and 17 for an injury-ravaged team, and seemingly earned the 2016 backup job with his competent play. Though otherwise remarkably durable, Ravens starter Joe Flacco is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in late November, which puts his Week 1 availability into some question.
After backing up Tom Brady for three years, Mallett was traded to Houston a week before the 2014 regular season, re-uniting with head coach Bill O'Brien, his offensive coordinator back in 2011 in New England. Mallett replaced Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starter in Week 11, but was then lost for the season midway through his second start due to a torn pectoral. Mallett has a cannon for an arm, but like many other strong-armed passers, he often tries to thread the needle on ill-advised throws and misses shorter routes by putting too much zip on the ball. His ceiling is high, but he is unproven and will have to win the job in training camp over Brian Hoyer. If he does, Mallett has the skills to make an impact, with a strong supporting cast that includes DeAndre Hopkins, Cecil Shorts, third-round pick Jaelen Strong and running back Arian Foster. He is expected to be healthy entering camp.
Mallett, who is in the last year of his rookie contract, has been reunited with new Houston coach Bill O'Brien, who is familiar with the QB after coordinating New England's offense in Mallett's rookie season. Ryan Fitzpatrick is on track to open the season as the Texans' starter, with Case Keenum and rookie Tom Savage also currently in the mix. That said, there is presumably an opportunity for Mallett to potentially make his way up the team's depth chart once he is up to speed with the Texans' offense.
Mallett only holds value in dynasty leagues, as he is expected to back up Tom Brady in 2013. Tim Tebow is also in the team's backup QB mix, but Mallett is aided in that regard by the fact that he has superior arm strength.
The strong-armed Mallett remains behind Brian Hoyer on the Patriots' QB depth chart, but Hoyer in line to become a free agent next year. There is is the possibility that if another team dazzles New England with an offer, the lure of acquiring a valuable asset could conceivably be enough for the team to part with either QB.
Look for Mallett's character concerns to subside in the coming months as he gets up to speed on the Patriot Way and he quietly learns the NFL ropes as an understudy to star QB Tom Brady. Mallett has plenty of detractors, but with no pressure to step in and rescue a franchise, he'll have time to round out his game, which has holes, at the pro level. Already blessed with great size and a cannon arm, Mallett would do well to mimic Brady's ability to sidestep pressure and make the correct reads. Easier said than done, but our view is that New England is a great landing spot for him, where he will either give the Patriots a talented insurance policy for Brady or perhaps serve as trade bait once the grooming process is complete.
