Holmes (ankle) was released by the Broncos on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The Broncos acquired Holmes via waivers after he was cut by the Bills in early December. The veteran wideout went on to appear in three games with Denver, hauling in his lone target during that span for a five-yard reception before moving to injured reserve after suffering a high-ankle sprain. Holmes should be back to full strength by the time teams reconvene for OTAs, but it's unlikely he'll have a robust market as he heads into free agency. As a 30-year-old wideout who has topped out at 47 receptions, 693 yards and four touchdowns during any of his seven seasons, Holmes may have to wait until some bigger names at the position come off the board before landing a depth role with a team.

Holmes has started at least one game in the NFL in each of the past five years and caught either three or four touchdowns in each of the past four. It is also true that the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder has averaged just 16 receptions per season over his seven-year NFL career, so buyer beware. The Bills really need some pass catchers on a thin roster to step up this year, and Holmes could plausibly emerge as a deep sleeper.
Holmes comes to Buffalo to provide another veteran option at receiver, not exactly a position for the team. It'll be his sixth NFL campaign in a pro career that has included some flashes of success. Holmes has reached the end zone three or more times for the past three seasons, and the 6-4, 210-pounder has a small chance to emerge as a viable option in the Bills' passing attack if he's able to land a significant complementary role alongside fellow newcomers Jordan Matthews and Zay Jones.
Holmes saw a steep dropoff in productivity with the additions of Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree as the Raiders' top wideout last season. He recorded 14 receptions for 201 yards, but still managed to find the end zone four times, tying his career high. Holmes brings a big-play dimension to the Raiders' attack and will figure to compete with Seth Roberts for the third spot in the depth chart this season.
Rod Streater suffered what proved to be a season-ending foot injury three weeks into the 2014 season, opening the door for Holmes to step into a starting role alongside James Jones. A rare blend of size (6-foot-4) and speed, Holmes appeared primed to emerge as a legitimate fantasy threat after he went for 5-74-1 in Week 4 and followed it up with a 121-yard, two-touchdown performance in Week 6. However, dropped passes (6) and the inconsistency of the offense as a whole doomed Holmes, as he was only able to find pay dirt once over his final 11 games. He also exceeded 70 yards just one time over the remainder of the year, and with Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree now set to start on the outside for Oakland, Holmes will have to compete with Rod Streater for looks out of the slot.
At 6-4, 223, the undrafted Holmes is the physical prototype of the modern elite wide receiver, and when Denarius Moore's shoulder injury opened up some snaps in the second half of last season, Holmes got a chance to start converting his raw tools into NFL production. The James Jones signing pushes him back down the depth chart though, and the Raiders' QB situation doesn't seem conducive to big passing numbers unless Derek Carr can develop very quickly. If Holmes cracks the starting lineup in 2014, he could post some impressive totals, but his skills are still too unrefined and there's too much competition on the roster for that to be a likely outcome.
Holmes will look to lock down a reserve role in training camp.
Young wide receiver prospect has enviable size and physical tools but still has a lot to learn before he can be trusted with a regular role in the offense. The Cowboys have a lot of patience, and a history of great results, with projects like Holmes though though (see: Romo, Tony and Austin, Miles) so if he starts to add some skill to his athleticism he could move up the depth chart in a hurry.
