Matthews will provide defensive line depth this year after racking up 13 total tackles in 2014.
Matthews will provide depth at defensive end in 2013, but it would take an injury to Osi Umenyiora or Kroy Biermann before he would get his shot to be a regular contributor on defense.
Matthews, a seventh-round pick by the Falcons in 2011, will provide depth at defensive end if he makes the 53-man roster.
The Falcons hope that Matthews can learn from the likes of John Abraham and Ray Edwards in 2011. He may be a starter down the road, but the Falcons are stacked at defensive end this season, so barring injury it's unlikely that Matthews will see a lot of playing time in 2011.
