Updating a previous report, Yates has been traded to the Falcons in exchange for linebacker Akeem Dent, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Yates was said to be released by the Texans on Tuesday, but his name mysteriously never appeared on the transaction report. The Texans will instead get something in exchange for the veteran quarterback, adding Dent to bolster their linebacker depth. Yates will now head to Atlanta, where he'll compete for a roster spot as Matt Ryan's primary backup.
The Texans have released Yates, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

Coach Bill O'Brien said the Texans may enter training camp with only three quarterbacks, which means either Yates or Case Keenum will be released, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Interim coach Wade Phillips said Tuesday that Yates is not considered an option to start Sunday's game against the Titans, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

It's unclear whether Case Keenum or Matt Schaub will start against the Titans on Sunday, but Phillips pretty much eliminated Yates from the equation after practice Tuesday. "Both of the other guys (Keenum and Schaub) have played a whole lot, and going into the last game, they (give) us the best opportunity," Phillips noted. "It just would be hard for T.J. to come in after not playing any the whole year."
Yates is being considered as the starter at quarterback for the final game of the season against Tennessee, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Interim head coach Wade Phillips will use the time available this week to evaluate Case Keenum, who has ligament damage in his right (throwing hand) thumb, before making a decision on his starter this week. Yates has been a forgotten man this season, playing in two games in mop-up duty.
Yates split reps with Case Keenum during Wednesday's practice, the Houston Chronicle reports. Starting quarterback Matt Schaub (leg) did not practice.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak is holding out naming a starter for this weekend's game against Kansas City and wouldn't say if Yates or Keenum was the No. 1 Wednesday. This will go on all week, perhaps until game time.

2014

2013

Yates is expected to serve as Matt Schaub's backup in 2013.

2012

After starting five games in Matt Schaub's absence last season, Yates will return to his back-up role this season with valuable game experience in case he is needed again.

2011

Yates turned around his pro prsspects with a breakout 2010 season at the University of North Carolina, turning himself into a fifth-round draft pick by Houston. He showed good maturity in 2010 after three seasons of inconsistency and calls for him to be replaced. Yates improved his accuracy and decision making in 2010 to lead the Tar Heels to an 8-5 record in a suspension-plagued season for the program. The Texans still have Matt Leinart, who was re-signed to a two-year deal, so Yates looks like the No. 3 QB for the Texans.
