Martin was released by the Lions on Monday, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.
ANALYSIS
Heading into the Lions' preseason finale, it was clear that Martin was on the outside looking in for a roster spot, so Detroit decided to cut bait with him early in order to open up more snaps for potential practice squad candidates at receiver during the last week of training camp. After appearing in just one game with the 49ers in 2016 and not making much of an impact in his previous four NFL seasons with the Patriots and Texans, Martin may not generate much interest on the open market.

Martin, a fringe-contender for the final spot at receiver for the Lions, had a strong training camp and looks to have a legitimate chance of making the final roster. However, a trip to the practice squad is probably the more likely outcome. Either way, he possesses almost zero fantasy value at present time.
Martin finished the 2015 regular season with 24 catches for 269 yards and two TDs in nine games for the Patriots after being acquired in a Sept. 17 trade with the Texans.
Martin enters his fourth season with the Texans and has not nailed down a roster spot. He's been close to losing his job the last two seasons, but has retained it, largely because of his ability to return kicks and punts. He wasn't very special at that special-teams task last year and once again is vulnerable.
Martin is pencilled into the no. 3 spot in the Texans' depth chart, and with former Patriots coordinator Bill O'Brien now in charge that role could see more targets than you might expect. He made a minimal impact last season though, and DeVier Posey might be a better fit in the slot role. Martin's position as the team's main return man also gives them a reason to limit his snaps on offense.
Martin, who opened last season as the team's third wideout and kick returner, eventually lost the No. 3 job to DeVier Posey. Martin impressed coaches during organized team activities, suggesting the wideout is primed to make a leap from year one to year two of his NFL experience. With Posey (Achilles) likely to be on the PUP list to start the 2013 season, Martin is expected to open the season as the Texans' third receiver, giving him an opportunity to stay there even after Posey's return.
Martin will compete for the third receiver position and should see playing time during his first NFL season, although he likely won't make much fantasy impact.
