The Ravens released Rainey on Monday, Jeff Zrebiec of The Baltimore Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Rainey's release opens up a roster spot for the addition of offensive lineman Andrew Donnal, formerly of the Rams. Furthermore, it could be a sign that wide receiver Michael Campanaro (shoulder) is ready to resume his return duties on special teams. The move could also hint that Danny Woodhead (knee), who has been designated to return from IR, could be back in the fold within a matter of weeks.

The 29-year-old Rainey has appeared in 61 regular-season games for three teams, most recently serving as an occasional passing-down back for the Giants in 2016. He was still unsigned in late July when the Ravens learned that Kenneth Dixon likely would miss the entire season with a knee injury. Baltimore brought Rainey in to compete with Javorius Allen and Taquan Mizzell for the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind Terrance West and Danny Woodhead.
The journeyman tailback winds up in New York where he'll battle for a piece of the team's running back committee with likely starter Rashad Jennings, third-down man Shane Vereen, Orleans Darkwa, Andre Williams and rookie Paul Perkins. Rainey is a long shot to make an impact, and there's a chance he fails to survive the final roster cut.
For the second straight season, Rainey came up big when the Bucs called his number (including a 144-yard rushing effort against the Rams in Week 2) but was never offered a real shot at seizing the starting job in their backfield on a long term basis. An undrafted free agent in 2012 who bounced through Baltimore and Cleveland before finding a home in Tampa, Rainey doesn't have great speed, but at 5-8, 212, he has the power, burst and low center of gravity to break tackles plus the vision and agility to avoid them, and his 34 missed or broken tackles in just 127 touches was among the best rates in the league. He can also contribute as a receiver, a skill that could be useful under new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, and while he didn't see extensive goal line action, the Bucs did give Rainey over half their carries in the red zone last year. Injury-prone Doug Martin and unproven Charles Sims are expected to battle in camp for the top spot on the depth chart, but it wouldn't be surprising to once again see Rainey get his chance to start should the other backs falter.
Due to season-ending injuries to Doug Martin and Mike James last year, Rainey ended up being the Bucs' leading rusher with 532 yards and five touchdowns on 137 carries. He also caught 11 passes and another touchdown in his first healthy year - suffered a knee injury in his rookie season. Rainey will attempt to edge out James and rookie Charles Sims (who will miss extended time out of the gate due to an ankle injury) for a backup role behind Martin.
Rainey was active a mere three times before a knee injury sidelined him for the remainder of his rookie season in 2012. With injuries to the Browns' backfield, he'll supply depth to the RB corps.
Rainey is competing with Anthony Allen, Damien Berry, and Bernard Pierce for the No. 2 running back job in Baltimore. He signed with Baltimore after going undrafted and could make the team as the No. 3 running back even if he doesn't win the battle to backup Ray Rice.
