The suspicion of marijuana possession charges issued to Thompson in February have been dropped, ESPN.com reports.

Thompson is facing a charge of misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and his case will be reviewed by the NFL, the Baltimore Sun reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Thompson was originally facing a felony charge in the wake of his Feb. 21 incident. The 25-year-old wideout figures to escape major legal sanctions but may still face punishment from the NFL. After serving as the Ravens' No. 5 receiver for much of 2013, Thompson will likely be competing for a roster spot in 2014 training camp, assuming he's still with the team. A misdemeanor marijuana possession charge probably won't affect his immediate standing with the Ravens, but it doesn't look good, and the team may keep that in mind come August.
Thompson was arrested for suspicion of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia in Gainesville, FL on Friday, ESPN.com reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Thompson, a former undrafted free agent with 15 receptions through two seasons, spent most of 2013 as the Ravens' No. 4 or 5 wideout and backup return man. The team seems to take a "talent trumps all" approach to off-the-field issues, but Thompson's not in a position to take any chances, as he would have faced competition for a roster spot in 2014 even without the recent legal issue. The two-year veteran also didn't pick the best time to get caught, as the Ravens are probably feeling a bit image conscious in the wake of Ray Rice's highly publicized recent domestic violence arrest. Thompson's legal problem doesn't sound nearly as severe as Rice's, particularly given the recent news that police have footage of the veteran running back knocking his wife unconscious. Still, Rice has been a key contributor since 2008 and has a contract that gives the Ravens little incentive to release him. Fair or not, it isn't unprecedented for a team to jettison a lesser player for a relatively minor transgression after a key player is involved in a more severe legal matter. Thompson won't necessarily lose his spot on the Ravens, but this won't help his chances to make the team, particularly if the league hands down a suspension. Even if everything blows over and the charges are dropped, the speedy Thompson probably won't be any better than third or fourth on the depth chart in 2014.
Thompson appeared in seven games in 2013, finishing the season with 10 receptions for 96 yards.

2014

2013

Thompson is a pure burner with 4.3 speed, and he earned a spot on the Baltimore roster as an undrafted free agent in 2012, despite having a relatively quiet career at the University of Florida. He mostly worked as a kick returner and No. 5 receiver as a rookie, but was displaced from his return role once Jacoby Jones emerged as a threat. Following the departure of Anquan Boldin, Thompson has a chance to compete for the No. 3 receiver role, although he could move up as high as No. 2 if the Ravens want Jones to keep most of his focus on special teams. Tandon Doss enters training camp as the favorite to beat out Thompson and a few other young receivers, but Thompson has consistently drawn high praise from both team officials and the Baltimore media, while Doss lacks high-end athleticism and explosiveness. Thompson probably won't be worth drafting in most leagues, but he could make for an interesting late-round flier in deeper formats.
