Shead announced his retirement Friday and will transition into a coaching role with the Seahawks, John Boyle of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Shead spent six seasons with the Seahawks, during which he played 54 games at safety and cornerback. The last time the 32-year-old saw the field was in 2019 with the Lions, a season in which he tallied 18 tackles and a forced fumble. The veteran will now aim to impart his defensive knowledge through his new coaching role.

Released by Seattle after missing all but two games in 2017, Shead was a 15-game starter for the Seahawks in 2016 who cranked out 56 tackles, 15 pass breakups and one interception working alongside the vaunted Richard Sherman. Now in Detroit, Shead again finds himself in the mix for a No. 2 role behind another blue-chip corner in 2018 first-team All-Pro Darius Slay. However, Shead will need to fend off both Nevin Lawson and Teez Tabor for snaps in 2018, and more than likely he'll split playing time with them throughout the season, making it hard to justify any of them as IDP options from the get-go.
Shead tore his ACL during the Seahawks' playoff loss to the Falcons in January and isn't guaranteed to be recovered in time for Week 1. When able to return to the fold, however, he'll likely have plenty of opportunities to prove him himself as a valuable IDP contributor given the presumed assumption that opposing offenses will be throwing away from teammate and shutdown corner Richard Sherman.
Shead will compete with Jeremy Lane and Tharold Simon for the starting right cornerback job. Shead started five games at cornerback last season and had one interception. He has two inches on Lane, who might be the preferred nickelback anyway. Simon is 6-3, but injury prone. Whoever lands the job should see a lot of passes, and potential interceptions, opposite Richard Sherman.
Shead likely will grab the fourth safety spot this season. He can also play cornerback, which increases his odds.
