Franklin will be forced to retire due to a neck injury, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Mike McCarthy announced Thursday that Franklin would not be back with the Packers, with the running back confirming that he has been ruled out from returning to play in the NFL. Despite losing Franklin, the Packers maintain a good degree of backfield depth, with Eddie Lacy, James Starks and DuJuan Harris still on hand, and Michael Hill -- along with undrafted rookies Rajion Neal and LaDarius Perkins -- also in the mix.

Aside from an invigorating 13-carry, 103-yard performance in Week 3 last year, the speedy Franklin barely made it onto the field with the first-team offense – he ran it just six times after that – and ended up having his season cut short by a neck injury. Moreover, the injury ended up resulting in Franklin having to call it a career in June.
The Packers' fourth-round draft pick, Franklin became UCLA's career-leader in rushing yards during a phenomenal senior campaign in which he posted more than 2,000 total yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging 6.1 YPC. At 5-10, 205, with sub-4.5 speed, Franklin is a surprisingly tough inside runner who also displays good vision and elusiveness in the open field. Although he has the look of a potential three-down back in the NFL down the road, Franklin enters the season behind fellow rookie Eddie Lacy, with an uncertain role out of the gate.
