Dustin Hopkins: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

Hopkins is only taking kickoffs during training camp so far and coach Doug Marrone has stated that's the way he'll have a chance to make the team, not as a field goal kicker, BuffaloBills.com reports.

Hopkins (groin) has been placed on injured reserve by the Bills.

The moves cements Dan Carpenter -- who has hit 11-of-12 field goal attempts this season -- as the Bills' kicker for the rest of the season, with Hopkins presumably a candidate to make a run for the team's kicking job in 2014.
Coach Doug Marrone feels that Hopkins, who has yet to play this season due to a groin injury, will be able to fully participate in practice next week, the Bills' official site reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Hopkins has practiced in small doses the last few weeks, but it sounds like the rookie kicker is close enough where he can start to let it go, which will include practicing kickoffs. That's all well and good, but we'll note veteran Dan Carpenter is 11 of 12 since stepping in, which includes two makes from 50-plus. It may be tough for the Bills to remove Carpenter from those duties while he's locked in, though it's a possibility the Bills activate Hopkins and make him a kickoff specialist until things sort themselves out.
Hopkins (groin) will not play in Thursday's game against the Browns, ESPN.com reports.

2013

A sixth-round selection out of Florida State, Hopkins will compete with incumbent Ryan Lindell for the Bills´┐Ż kicking duties in training camp. The rookie connected on 5-of-6 field goals from 50-plus in his senior season and boasts a stronger leg than Lindell, who was rarely trusted from long range (1-for-2 last two seasons) by the previous coaching staff. While Hopkins will have to deal with the transition to cold weather, his growth potential may be enough for the rebuilding Bills to give him the job. Whoever wins the gig likely won't put up elite point totals given the team's murky quarterback situation.
