Montee Ball is expected to start for the Broncos, but he will have to outplay C.J. Anderson in training camp to win the job.

Mike James: Past News Updates   ( ▲ View most recent update )

The Buccaneers placed James (ankle) on injured reserve Wednesday, Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Head coach Greg Schiano announced Tuesday that James would miss the rest of the season after breaking his ankle Monday night, but Wednesday's move makes that official. With James and Doug Martin (shoulder) both on IR, Brian Leonard and Bobby Rainey figure to split the carries in some fashion for the Buccaneers the rest of the way.
Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano confirmed Tuesday that James has a fractured ankle and is out for the remainder of the season, Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune reports.

James has been diagnosed with a fractured ankle, after exiting Monday's game in the first quarter, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

In James' absence, Brian Leonard is filling in as the lead back, while Bobby Rainey works as the No. 2. Given the nature of the injury and the fact that there are only seven weeks left in the season, it's possible that this could put an end to James' rookie campaign. For the time being, owners shouldn't make that assumption, as James still needs to undergo further testing in order to determine the severity and exact nature of the injury. It will be quite surprising if he doesn't miss a few games, at the very least.
James (ankle) has been ruled out from returning to Monday's game against Miami, the Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

James gashed the Dolphins for 41 rushing yards on the opening drive of the game but had to be carted off the field toward the end of the drive. His replacement, Brian Leonard, has mostly served as a third-down back throughout his career but will now be asked to handle lead-back duties. As the only other halfback active for Monday's game, Bobby Rainey also figures to take some snaps. Given how well James was playing, this will be a tough loss for owners should the rookie miss time beyond Monday. Many of James' fantasy owners already lost Doug Martin (shoulder) for the season.
James left Monday's game in the first quarter with an ankle injury and is questionable to return, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's Chris Perkins reports.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

James suffered the injury on a goal-line run that came up just short of the end zone during the Bucs' opening drive. He was carted off the field, so it should probably be taken as a positive that his return is questionable. James managed to pile up 41 rushing yards on that opening drive but may now be done for the night. Brian Leonard is next up on the depth chart and handled all three carries on the Bucs' second drive. Should something happen to Leonard, Bobby Rainey is the only other halfback active for the Bucs on Monday.
With Doug Martin (shoulder) out for the year, James appears unchallenged for the starting running back role for the rest of the 2013 season.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

With Martin out of the picture, James is a solid flex consideration in most cases going forward. After totaling just 64 yards from scrimmage against Carolina two weeks ago, James pummeled the Seahawks for 158 yards on 28 carries (5.6 YPC) on Sunday.
James had a monster game in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss at Seattle, rushing for a career-high 158 yards. He also threw a short touchdown and caught two passes for eight yards.

James ran for 39 yards on 10 carries and caught four passes for 25 yards in Thursday's 31-13 loss to the Panthers.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Brian Leonard saw just one carry but handled most of the third-down work, finishing with six receptions for 32 yards on seven targets. Neither back had an inspiring performance, though that was to be expected against the stiff Carolina front-seven. With Doug Martin (shoulder) out indefinitely, look for James to get the start again next Sunday in Seattle. He'll have another touch matchup, and Brian Leonard still figures to handle most of the snaps in obvious passing situations.
With Doug Martin (shoulder) out, James will start Thursday's game against the Panthers, the Tampa Bay Times' Joe Smith reports.
