Donnell was released by the Ravens on Friday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Donnell was signed by Baltimore back at the end of July following a disappointing 2016 season with the Giants. His release shows that the Ravens, even with Crockett Gillmore's season-ending knee injury, feel as though they have enough depth at tight end with the likes of Nick Boyle, Ben Watson and Maxx Williams.

Returning from a neck injury, Donnell is vying for the team's starting tight end job with Will Tye who filled in admirably when Donnell went down last year. Donnell has more size, but has lost focus at times. Donnell is reportedly having a strong camp, but this competition could go down to the wire.
Tight end was unsettled for the Giants out of training camp last year, but Donnell quickly took control with a strong first month of the season, totaling 25 receptions, 236 yards and four touchdowns in the first four games. That ended up amounting to nearly 40 percent of his catches and yards for the season, however, as the next 12 games featured eight with less than 30 yards and just two touchdowns total. Donnell's fall coincided with the rise of Odell Beckham Jr., who returned from injury Week 5 and went on to have an historic season. At 6-6, 265, Donnell makes for a good red-zone target — he tied for the league lead among tight ends last season — but he does not have the speed (4.91 40) to beat linebackers in coverage. No coincidence, all six of his touchdowns came in the red zone. With Victor Cruz returning from injury, the emergence of Rueben Randle and a full season of Beckham, targets could be scarce for Donnell. The Giants also signed running back Shane Vereen, who could poach some of the third-down work Donnell thrived on last season. That could mean more pass blocking for Donnell. It also means his fantasy value will be even more tied to touchdowns.
The 6-6, 265-pound Donnell will jostle for slotting on the team's TE depth chart this preseason along with Daniel Fells, Xavier Grimble, Kellen Davis and Adrien Robinson.
