Manziel would be a much more exciting fantasy prospect if it weren't for Josh Gordon's suspension, but that development leaves Manziel with the possibility of 5-foot-7 Andrew Hawkins as his No. 1 rece...

Coach Mike Pettine indicated Monday that the Browns expect to name their starting quarterback by the team's third preseason game, ESPN.com reports. "It's definitely still up in the air," Pettine said with regard to the upcoming job battle between Manziel and Brian Hoyer.

The Browns have agreed to contract terms with Manziel, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

While Manziel -- the No. 22 overall pick in May's NFL draft -- is slated to head into training camp as the team's No. 2 quarterback behind Brian Hoyer, the dynamic rookie should have every chance to compete for the top job as the summer progresses. It seems only a matter of time before he claims the assignment, but the Browns clearly plan to make Manziel earn it.
Manziel is still behind Brian Hoyer (knee), but the latter's lead isn't "insurmountable," Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

Manziel isn't guaranteed the Browns' starting QB job out of the gate according to head coach Mike Pettine, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports."Whether he was taken at four, or going at 22, it will be a competition and I meant that when I said it,'' said Pettine. "I don't think you can hand jobs to people when they come in."

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Manziel certainly anticipates being the starter at some point this season, but as expected, nothing will be handed to him. Pettine generally has an unfavorable view on starting rookie quarterbacks, and Manziel will be no exception. Brian Hoyer currently sits at No. 1 on the Browns' QB depth chart, so it will be his job to lose during camp. Although Manziel has the "it" factor, Hoyer is the more experienced candidate, as he already has five NFL seasons under his belt, three of which came under Tom Brady in New England. He was the starter for the Browns last season before tearing his ACL, although he had just a 47.5 QBR over three games played. Manziel certainly is the man that will sell tickets in Cleveland, and has more fantasy upside due to his playmaking ability, but the two candidates will begin camp on a level playing field in what should be an exciting competition.
The Browns selected Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, 22nd overall.

Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

Cleveland traded up from the 26th pick to land Manziel, a selection we consider a huge steal. Waiting on a quarterback was risky, but the Browns played it right by gambling that their target would fall. Despite recent comments from coach Mike Pettine indicating that Brian Hoyer had at least a slight grip on the starting quarterback role in Cleveland, it's hard to see Hoyer holding off a player as dynamic as Manziel. If he earns the starting role, Manziel will have considerable fantasy upside with Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron to throw to.
According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, the Browns will not select Manziel at the fourth overall pick.
