Chris Borland: Opts For Retirement
LBSan Francisco 49ers
Ankle
March 16, 2015
Borland (ankle) has decided to retire because of concerns about the long-term effects of repetitive head trauma, ESPN reports. "I just honestly want to do what's best for my health," Borland said. "From what I've researched and what I've experienced, I don't think it's worth the risk."
ANALYSIS
Borland is just 24 and hasn't had major head trauma in the past few years, so he decided to retire solely based on concerns about his long-term health. He says he had just two diagnosed concussions, both before college, although he says he suffered a undiagnosed concussion last year in training camp that got him worried over future implications. Borland's retirement is a major blow to the 49ers' defense that saw Patrick Willis also retire last week.

2014 Fantasy Outlook
Selected in the third round (77th overall) of the 2014 draft, Borland joins a 49ers team that has tons of talent at linebacker, although he may get an opportunity to contribute early in the season. With NaVorro Bowman expected to start the season on the PUP list due to a torn ACL suffered in last year's NFC championship game, Borland could step in to hold down the fort, putting him in a solid position to be an early IDP contributor should he win the starting job. He fell in the draft due to a prior shoulder injury, and he doesn't have great speed or length, but he still managed to eclipse the 100-tackle mark in his last three seasons at Wisconsin, adding 10.5 sacks in that span. As of right now, he is listed as the primary backup to both Patrick Willis and Michael Wilhoite at middle linebacker.
