All the talent in the world can be wiped away by injuries, which has been Niklas' reality since he was selected in the second round of the 2014 draft. During his third spring practice with the Cardinals, he required surgery on a fractured finger in his left hand. Later, his rookie year came to a close with his placement on injured reserve due to a pair of serious ankle sprains. In 2015, Niklas was active for all 16 games, but tight ends Darren Fells and Jermaine Gresham blocked him from regular reps. To wrap up his tour of the recovery room, Niklas suffered a wrist injury in Week 3 last season that required a procedure and another stint on IR. Healthy once again, he won't have to contend with the departed Fells in the upcoming campaign, but Gresham resides at the top of the TE depth chart. Still, Niklas will be given another chance to prove Arizona's investment.
In his second season in the league, Niklas played in all 16 contests after only appearing in seven as a rookie due to injury. In a reserve role, Niklas hauled in all four targets for 33 yards and two touchdowns. The 23-year-old remains behind Darren Fells and Jermaine Gresham on the Cardinals' depth chart, but has the potential to see more opportunities in 2016. Niklas has the build (6-foot-6, 270 pounds) to be a serious red-zone threat, which makes him worthy of selection in dynasty leagues.
After John Carlson, Arizona's leading tight end last season, unexpectedly retired in May, the organization boasted little experience from its tight ends until Jermaine Gresham was brought on board in late July. Gresham represents a pass-catching option to Niklas' prowess as a blocker, meaning the latter's snap count on a weekly basis could depend on the game plan. A second-round pick in 2014, Niklas has been plagued by high left ankle sprains in the interim, which kept the rookie off the field after Week 11 and ultimately required surgery in the midst of the Cardinals' minicamp in June. After Gresham, Darren Fells seems to be Niklas' primary competitor for reps, but his health could ultimately undermine his second professional campaign.
The Cardinals drafted Niklas, a 6-6, 270 monster out of Notre Dame, with a second-round pick in this year's draft. Though Niklas oozes with potential, he's a bit raw after transitioning from outside linebacker to tight end only two years ago, and joins a crowded depth chart in Arizona that already has Rob Housler, John Carlson, and Jake Ballard on the roster. With a year or two of seasoning, Niklas could be an impact player, particularly in the red zone given his impressive frame, but he'll likely struggle with consistency and limited playing time in 2014.
