The Panthers informed Boston of his release Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Cutting Boston will save the Panthers roughly $3.5 million against the cap. The 28-year-old safety notched a career-high 95 tackles (61 solo) to go with one sack, four pass breakups and an interception across 16 games last year. Following Boston's release, free safety should be a key target for Carolina during the 2021 NFL Draft and/or free agency.

After spending his first three seasons in Carolina, Boston returned ahead of his sixth campaign last year. In reclaiming the team's starting free safety gig, Boston finished with 68 tackles, 11 passes defended and three interceptions while playing all 16 games. He then re-signed with the Panthers this offseason, but he'll be tasked with adjusting to a new defensive scheme in 2020. As long as that transition doesn't impact his role, the veteran's production should remain relatively stable, as he's averaged nearly 70 tackles while nabbing 13 interceptions over the past four campaigns.
After spending his first three seasons with the Panthers, Boston recently enjoyed some success out west. Playing for the Chargers in 2017 and the Cardinals last year, he recorded 79 tackles in back-to-back campaigns. He also nabbed a combined eight interceptions over that span. In returning to Carolina, Boston could start at free safety alongside Eric Reid. That role would be conducive to decent production, and likely far better than his average of 36 stops per season during his prior stint with the team.
It's a bit of a surprise to see Boston without a home despite posting career highs in tackles (79), interceptions (5) and pass deflections (8) with the Chargers last season. While the value of the safety position appears to be at an all-time low, Boston's consistency and playmaking ability should help him land with a new team sometime before Week 1.
With veteran Roman Harper departing this offseason, Boston is projected to start at strong safety going into his third year. In 16 games last season, Boston posted just 29 tackles, but that production is bound to increase with more snaps. While free safety Kurt Coleman seems the superior fantasy option, Boston should relish having more opportunities to make an impact this term.
A fourth-round pick in 2014, Boston blossomed into the Panthers' starting free safety over the course of an encouraging rookie campaign last year. In 11 games played, Boston recorded 26 tackles, three passes defended, one interception and one touchdown. He also intercepted a pass during the Panthers' two-game playoff run. Entering Year 2, Boston is expected to assume additional responsibilities in the Carolina defense, which should result in his fantasy stock improving significantly.
Rookie fourth-round pick figures to back-up Thomas DeCoud at free safety this season.
