Let go from practice squad
QBFree Agent
October 28, 2020
The Jets released Fales from the practice squad Wednesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The Jets are satisfied with the three quarterbacks they have on the active roster, so they're moving on from Fales, who suited up in two games for the team in 2019. The 30-year-old signal-caller likely tops out as a practice squad player at this point in his career.

Fales will compete with rookie fourth-rounder James Morgan for the right to back up Sam Darnold. Coach Adam Gas values the 29-year-old's familiarity with his system, but Fales has just 48 passes' worth of regular-season NFL experience under his belt. Even as far as backup quarterbacks go, Fales ranks near the bottom of the list.
Fales hasn't shown much promise in the preseason, but Tom Savage's most recent concussion puts the backup job behind Matthew Stafford up for grabs. Josh Johnson was brought in to give him some competition, and it so far it seems like Fales is going to lose this battle.
Fales faces competition from Bryce Petty to be the Dolphins No. 3 quarterback behind Ryan Tannehill and Brock Osweiler. Fales saw the field only once in the 2017 season, due to a slew of injuries in Miami's quarterback room. The 27-year-old is not expected to see nearly as much on-field action in 2018.
The Bears spent a sixth-round draft pick on Fales last April, and were pleased enough by his performance in training camp to keep him around as their third quarterback to open 2014. However, when injuries at other positions compromised the team’s depth, Fales was one of the Bears’ first cuts, and after clearing waivers, he ended up spending most of the season on the practice squad. With a new regime taking over this season, Fales will effectively face an open camp competition with undrafted rookie Shane Carden for No. 3 quarterback duties, should the Bears elect to keep more than one backup.
After an accomplished career at San Jose State, Fales was selected by the Bears in the sixth round of May's draft. While he'll technically be afforded the opportunity to compete with Jordan Palmer and Jimmy Clausen for backup duties behind starting quarterback Jay Cutler, Fales is more likely to stick with the Bears as a developmental No. 3 quarterback or as a practice squad player.
