Despite an impressive collegiate career at Tulane, Darkwa went undrafted in 2014, and that lack of respect has extended to this offseason as he remains unsigned despite a strong 2017 season spent working behind an awful Giants offensive line. The 26-year-old ran for a career-high 751 yards at a rate of 4.4 per carry last year, taking over starting duties in Week 5 and giving the offense the steady production it wasn't getting from more highly touted backs like Paul Perkins and Wayne Gallman. Darkwa runs with some power and elusiveness and uses his solid build (6-0, 215) to bully his way to extra yards after contact, and while he isn't a natural pass catcher, his solid blocking prevents him from being a liability on passing downs. If he lands with the right organization and things fall his way again, he could turn that chip on his shoulder into another surprisingly productive performance.
Darkwa is an afterthought this year after the team brought in Shaun Draughn and drafted Wayne Gallman in the fourth round. If Darkwa does stick, he'll likely spend much of his time on special teams.
"The Dark Horse" is once again not slated to see much work, and the Giants selection of Paul Perkins only solidifies that notion. Rashad Jennings is still the ostensible starter with Shane Vereen around for third downs and Andre Williams' carcass — should he make the cut — for short yardage. Darkwa did passably on 36 carries last year (4.3 YPC), but the sample's too small to be especially meaningful.
Darkwa gained nearly 3,000 yards on the ground and scored 39 rushing touchdowns in his four seasons as a member of Tulane’s backfield. His college success didn’t really translate much to the NFL, however. Splitting 2014 between the Dolphins and the Giants, the rookie back finished the campaign with just nine rushes for 23 yards and a touchdown, adding an additional five catches for 48 yards. He’ll likely serve as depth in a 2015 Giants backfield featuring Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams on early downs and Jennings and Shane Vereen in passing situations. While most of his work should come on special teams, at 6-foot, 215 pounds and running a 4.46 40, he has the physical skills to make an impact in the unlikely event he gets an extended opportunity.
Darkwa was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Tulane and would have to excel on special teams to make the team as the Dolphins have several players ahead of him on the depth chart at running back.
