Exclusive Fantasy Analysis (FREE PREVIEW)

No quarterback in the draft is generating as much media hype as Savage right now, with some even suggesting the first 40 picks as a possibility. We're skeptical of this idea. He has some redeeming qualities -- particularly his height (6-4) and arm strength, but nearly everything else in his game is a question. For every time Savage makes a beautiful, high-velocity throw on target, there are one or two other plays where he stares down a receiver, misses an open target or fails to sense the pass rush. Considering both his progressions and accuracy tend to be hit-or-miss, we're not all that optimistic about his ability to capitalize on his arm strength. It's worth noting that his overall college résumé is rather discouraging -- Savage played for Rutgers in 2009 and 2010 but lost his starting role to Chas Dodd, a player who's nowhere near the NFL radar. Savage also proved to be a downgrade from 2012 starting Pittsburgh quarterback Tino Sunseri, who's currently a CFL quarterback. We think Savage might come off the board in the third or fourth round, but we'd suggest that it would be misguided to select Savage as a starting candidate rather than a luxury project. Along with Johnny Manziel, Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Derek Carr, we'd suspect Jimmy Garoppolo and Zach Mettenberger are ahead of Savage in the draft order. Players like David Fales, Aaron Murray, Logan Thomas and AJ McCarron seem like Savage's more realistic competition.
