Baltimore placed Villanueva on its reserve/retirement list Wednesday, signaling that the offensive tackle will end his playing career, Clifton Brown of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The two-time Pro Bowl selection spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Steelers before joining Baltimore for the 2021 season. His retirement should clear $6 million in salary cap space for Baltimore ahead of the start of free agency next week, while the team hopes that left tackle Ronnie Stanley -- whom Villanueva filled in for last year -- will be back to full strength in 2022 to reclaim his starting role.

Villanueva comes to Baltimore from rival Pittsburgh to add some veteran tackle depth in the wake of the Orlando Brown trade. The 32-year-old Villanueva projects to slot in at right tackle opposite Ronnie Stanley.
Charged with protecting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's blind side, Villanueva will again start at left tackle this season. He has done a good job, helping to limit opposing defenses to less than 1.5 sacks per game over the past two seasons.
Not expected to make the 53-man roster last season, Villanueva was a pleasant surprise who has now secured the starting left tackle position.
Villanueva jumps from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, but will be hard-pressed to make the 53-man roster out of training camp.
An Army graduate and former wide receiver, Villanueva will attempt to secure an assignment as a 3-4 end.
