Closer Watch

Washington - Drew Storen earned his first save of the season during the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Brewers. While the former first-round pick has been effective in a setup role this season, It's worth noting that he entered the game in the eighth inning with a three-run lead before the Nats extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the frame. As a result, Storen finished the game by tossing a second inning (he still only threw 23 pitches), and it's possible that a closer score might have prompted manager Jim Riggleman to turn to lefty Sean Burnett.

Recommended Pickup

Jed Lowrie, SS, BOS - Hype trains pick up steam much faster when they begin rolling on the east coast, but Lowrie is making his case to steal Marco Scutaro's job as the starting shortstop in Boston. He went 4-for-5 with a homer and four RBI in Monday's win over the Blue Jays, but his hot streak to open the season (.516, 2 HR, 9 RBI) is really an extension of the bigger picture. In his last 66 games (dating back to his activation from the DL last July), Lowrie is hitting .322 with 11 homers and 33 RBI over 202 at-bats. Translated, that amounts to about 25 homers over the course of a full season and he's done that will showing good plate discipline (27:27 BB:K).

Other recent recommendations:Jon Herrera, Bartolo Colon, Kyle Farnsworth, Angel Sanchez and Matt LaPorta.
