Closer Watch - A closer look at intriguing ninth-inning situations (also check out our Closer Grid)

Arizona – With J.J. Putz on the DL, David Hernandez converted Saturday's save opportunity. He appears to be the interim closer in Putz's absence.

Chicago White Sox – Matt Thornton picked up a two-inning save Saturday to give regular closer Sergio Santos a day off after having pitched three days in a row.

Cleveland – Vinnie Pestano notched a save Saturday for the Indians, but Carlos Perez was activated from the bereavement list Sunday and will reclaim the closer's duties.

Minnesota – Matt Capps had a significant meltdown Saturday, allowing four runs in the ninth inning to get pinned with the loss. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Capps will keep his job, but after Capps struggled again Sunday, the Twins may opt to give Joe Nathan - or maybe Glen Perkins, who picked up his first career save Sunday – save opportunities in the short term.

Recommended Pickup

Phil Hughes, P, NYY – Hughes will return to the rotation with a 94 mph fastball in tow. His drop in velocity earlier in the year was a mystery, but it seems the worst is behind him. Hughes struck out eight over 6.1 innings in Double-A in his last start. Ivan Nova was optioned to make room on the roster for Hughes, who would be a logical addition for anyone who has to figure out what to do with Nova. Only owned in 37% of Yahoo! leagues, Hughes should make a nice pick-up for the second half of the season.

Other recent recommendations:Bartolo Colon, David Hernandez, Alex Presley, Ben Revere, Chris Heisey
