Closer Watch
Boston – Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he hopes to stretch out Alfredo Aceves, but not necessarily to get him ready to start before the season is over. It looks like Valentine wants Aceves, who has lost the closer's job, will be used much like he was last season -- pitching multiple innings wherever he's needed. Confirming Valentine's words, Aceves came on to pitch Wednesday when the Red Sox were trailing by seven. This affirms that Bailey will be closing games for Boston in the final weeks of the season. Feel free to grab Andrew Bailey if he's still available in your league.
Kansas City – After recording saves Tuesday and Wednesday, Greg Holland was rested for Thursday's opportunity, ceding the chance to Kelvin Herrera. The hard-throwing Herrera, whose fastball was clocked at 100 mph during the outing, worked around a walk and a hit to preserve a 2-1 victory over the Tigers. Holland has yet to falter since inheriting the closer role after Jonathan Broxton was traded, so Herrera won't receive future save chances unless Holland has pitched on consecutive nights. Herrera appears ahead of Aaron Crow and Tim Collins in the pecking order for save opportunities should Holland get injured.
Los Angeles (N.L.) – The team announced Friday that Brandon League and Ronald Belisario would share the closer's role until Kenley Jansen (irregular heartbeat) is deemed ready to return. With no timetable for Jansen's return, the two players could potentially serve the ninth-inning role for the duration of the season. Jansen missed a full month with the heart issue last season, and it's reasonable to think the team might give him more time off this time around. Belisario receive the first save opportunity earlier in the week, but League may end up getting the majority of the opportunities given the excellent work he provided in the role with the Mariners last season.
San Francisco – Sergio Romo retired the only batter he faced Thursday to record his eighth save of the season. Lopez nearly got a six-out save, but failed to retire the final two hitters he faced, affording Romo the opportunity. Romo has 22 holds this season, but he's been seeing a good share of save chances lately as part of San Francisco's closer committee.

Recommended Pickup
Carlos Villanueva, SP, TOR – With Brandon Morrow missing two-plus months with an oblique injury and Ricky Romero essentially forgetting how to pitch, the case could be made that Villanueva has been the Jays' top starter this season. Villanueva has been shuttled between the rotation and long relief throughout his career to mostly average results, but has thrived since being installed in the rotation in late June. In the 11 starts since, he has gone 5-4 with a 3.03 ERA while holding opponents to a .224 batting average in 65.1 innings. He's also been an excellent source of strikeouts during that time, collecting 65 Ks, or about a strikeout per inning. Villanueva should remain a mainstay in the rotation for the rest of the season, and he's provided a big enough of a sample size to inspire optimism. He is owned in only 10 percent of ESPN leagues, 25 percent of Yahoo! leagues, and 54 percent of CBS leagues.
