Closer Watch

Pirates - Tony Watson earned the save Thursday, but it was a simple matter of availability in the Pittsburgh pen given the heavy workload shouldered by Mark Melancon and Jason Grilli earlier in the week. On a related note, check out or new Reliever Workload page to monitor these situations each morning!

Cubs - Carlos Marmol picked up his second save of the season Thursday, but allowed a few baserunners in the process. The log:

Donovan Solano walked
Austin Kearns singled
Juan Pierre hit into a fielder's choice
Placido Polanco flew out
Giancarlo Stanton struck out swinging.

Kevin Gregg appeared in games Monday and Tuesday, and was back in the mix to record the save for the Cubs on Friday night against the Marlins.

D-Backs - J.J. Putz secured the win Thursday for his fourth save of the season, just a couple of days after getting a vote of confidence from manager Kirk Gibson. The key for Putz lies in his splitter, a pitch that is simply unhittable when he's able to harness it.

Recommended Pickup

Eric Young Jr., OF, COL - Much like Rajai Davis in Toronto, Young's value comes and goes with his limited opportunities to play on a regular basis. In addition to starting eight of the last 10 games entering Friday, Young was the Rockies' leadoff man in all of those contests. Given the loaded lineup behind him, there is a ton of value on the table as long as he remains in that spot, as it's only a matter of time until he'll begin to pile up stolen bases and runs scored.

Other Recent Recommendations: Lucas Duda, Brandon Crawford, Ricky Nolasco and Didi Gregorius.
