2014 NFL Draft Needs: Detroit Lions

This article is part of our NFL Draft series.

Areas of Need

1. Wide Receiver

Be it at wide receiver or tight end, the Lions can't go any longer without finding a complementary threat to take some of the pressure off Calvin Johnson. Kris Durham simply isn't good enough, while the 32-year-old Nate Burleson will likely be an offseason cap casualty. Even if Burleson sticks around, he should probably only be a No. 3 or No. 4 wideout at this stage in his career.

2. Cornerback

Rashean Mathis, 33, was arguably the Lions' best cornerback in 2013, and he's now slated to test the waters of free agency. With a solid safety duo under contract and a strong front seven, the Lions may just be a young cornerback away from completing their defense.

3. Tight End

After five mostly disappointing seasons in Detroit, Brandon Pettigrew will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The Lions probably want to move on, and red-zone threat Joseph Fauria may not be ready for a full-time role. Fauria impressed as an undrafted rookie in 2013, with seven of his 18 receptions going for touchdowns.
