| Recent Blog Post: Draft Day Mock Draft: The Craziest Mock You'll See |
Today is like Christmas for NFL teams. Some teams will have their stockings stuffed with gifts, and some with coal. Until today, I have undertook the impossible practice of predicting the picks without trades. Today, I make an even more ridiculous prediction by trying to predict the trades that will happen in tonight's first round of the NFL Draft. Enjoy the craziness that follows. It'll make tonight seem rather tame. The Green means a team traded up to that spot, the pale red means the team traded down. All in all there were five trades predicted.

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is taking a medical leave of absence that is expected to last between seven and 10 days, the Houston Chronicle reports. Phillips will undergo surgery on his kidney and have his gall bladder removed. To the extent Phillips is responsible for the resurgence in the Texans' defense this season, this may alter fantasy plans if you have Houston. Linebackers coach Reggie Herring, who has worked under Phillips since 2008, will take over the play-calling.

The Texans will switch to a 3-4 defense under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, the Houston Chronicle reports. This probably works out best for Houston because they have more quality at linebacker than they do on the front.

The Texans hired Wade Phillips as their defensive coordinator, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. While hiring a retread like Phillips isn't going to energize the fan base, Houston head coach Gary Kubiak was not in the position to groom the next great defensive mind. If the Texans don't turn things around in 2011, the whole lot will be jettisoned -- Kubiak, Phillips and general manager Rick Smith.

Texans owner Bob McNair confirmed that head coach Gary Kubiak will return for the 2011 season, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. This probably isn't the most popular decision within the Houston fan base and sports media, but Kubiak does have support amongst the players. Playoff aspirations and expectations were in the air when the Texans started training camp in July 2010, and they fell far short at 6-10. Mostly it was a bad defense that cost Houston wins, but there had been some questionable play calling and clock management issues that lay at Kubiak's doorstep. Although it wasn't stated as a condition of Kubiak's return to the sideline, the coach fired defensive coordinator Frank Bush and three other coaches on the defensive side of the ball.

Texans owner Bob McNair confirmed that head coach Gary Kubiak will return for the 2010 season, the Houston Chronicle reports. Kubiak has one more year remaining on his contract, and his future came under question with some disappointing efforts from his team this season. The 2009 team ended the season on a four-game winning streak and finished with the franchise's first winning season at 9-7.

The Texans will be able to play their home games at Reliant Stadium, which suffered some damage from Hurricane Ike, the Houston Chronicle reports. The facility suffered some damage to the roof panels, but the stadium is structurally sound. This means the Texans will have to keep the roof open for all home games this season.

The Texans game this weekend against the Ravens has been moved to Monday night in order to let the city of Houston deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, which is expected to arrive in the area on Friday.

The Texans on Wednesday named former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman offensive coordinator. Sherman is the fourth offensive coordinator in franchise history. He replaces Troy Calhoun, who left to take the top coaching job at Air Force.
In another move, Kyle Shanahan was named the team's quarterbacks coach. The 52-year-old served as assistant coach this past season with the Texans, a title he will retain.

The Texans hired Denver assistant general manager Rick Smith to become the second GM in Houston's history, the Houston Chronicle reports. Smith rejoins head coach Gary Kubiak, who worked as an assistant coach in Denver for the last 11 seasons.

Less than two weeks after making the decision to pass on Reggie Bush as the first pick in the NFL draft, Charlie Casserly on Wednesday resigned as general manager. In a meeting with Bob McNair on Wednesday morning, Casserly told the owner he wanted to pursue a job in the NFL office in New York. His resignation had been rumored for months and intensified following the April 29-30 draft.
