11/6: As Francisco Rodriguez was chasing down Bobby Thigpen this summer, it was assumed by many that as a free agent, K-Rod would command something along the lines of a five-year deal at $18 million per. Now however, the market seems quite a bit softer. The Yankees and Red Sox don't need closers, and teams like the Dodgers, Cubs, and Tigers have other holes to fill. This could drop him into the 4/52 range, making it possible Rodriguez will return to the Angels. If he doesn't, look for the club to turn to a cheaper option like Brian Fuentes or perhaps Jose Arredondo.
9/29: By any objective measure (ERA, strikeouts, walks), Rodriguez was probably at best, the AL's fifth best reliever. Still, with 62 saves thanks to a whopping 24 more opportunities than any other reliever, he was a fantasy stud yet again. Rodriguez saw his strikeout rate (10.1 K/9) dip to its lowest level since 2003 while the walks increased to a 4.5 BB/9 rate. On a more positive note, he's proven to be durable for the sixth consecutive year (sans the early-season ankle problems) and at 26, there should be more strong years left in that violent delivery. K-Rod hits the open market and though few teams can afford the rumored $90 million pricetag, there will be interest. Suitors: Angels, Tigers, Cubs, Mets. Prediction: Re-signs with the Angels for five years, $90 million.
