Part of this week's field
August 14, 2017
Molder is in the field for this week's Wyndham Championship.
ANALYSIS
Molder withdrew from the last event he was scheduled to play in -- the Barracuda Championship -- but he will get back on the course this week. Molder missed the cut in seven of his last nine events, but not only will he need to make the cut this week, he will also need to finish near the top of the leaderboard in order to have any chance of making the playoff field.

Molder spent the early part of his career just trying to stay healthy, but once his health was in-order, he showed the golf world that he's actually pretty good. 2009 was the first season that Molder was 100% healthy and it showed with the numbers he posted. He picked-up his first and only PGA Tour win in 2011, which helped him nearly crack the $2 million mark. That was his high-point and although he had a couple rough years after, he's bounced-back fairly well over the past two years. The problem with Molder is his upside, which is limited. As such, he's not a good salary cap option this season. In draft leagues, he should go off the board near the 10th-round.
Molder spent the early part of his career just trying to stay healthy and stay on the PGA Tour. Since that rough stretch at the beginning of his career, Molder has figured out how to retain his card each year with little problem, but he's never quite figured out how to take his game to the next level. The past two years have been particularly bothersome as he's failed to crack the $1 million mark in either season. Since he's appeared to level-off, he doesn't make for a good salary cap candidate this season. In draft leagues he may go undrafted.
Molder earned over $800k in 2013 without a single top-10. Ah to be a professional on the PGA Tour. So how did he manage to earn that much without at least one really solid week? Eight top-25s certainly help. All those top-25s added up to a decent year, but it unless he can find some high-end finishes this year, his luck may run out. Molder's been at this for a while and we now the upside isn't really there anymore so he's not a good salary cap option this year.
Molder is a rarity on the PGA TOUR. He started his PGA career about a decade ago, but had little success. He then toiled away on the Nationwide Tour for several seasons before getting another crack at the PGA TOUR. Once back, Molder left nothing to chance. This season is his fifth consecutive on the PGA TOUR in his most recent run, and all signs point to a sixth season next year. While Molder has been consistent the last few seasons, he hasn't shown much upside, which means he's not a good option for salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, he's an eighth-rounder.
Prior to last season, Molder's career-high earnings was about $1.4 million. Before that, he could often be found sub-$500K. A win late in the season at the Frys.com Open catapulted him into the top-40, but don't be fooled, he won't be there long. There's always a chance that the win could boost his confidence and free him up to play his best golf, but the track record is too long to ignore. Molder will top out in the low-to-mid $1-million range this season. In draft leagues, Molder should go somewhere in the sixth or seventh round.
Molder's best result in 2010 was a fourth-place finish at the RBC Canadian Open. Although he failed to crack the top 3 during the season, he finished with a career high in earnings. Contributing to his earnings was a career-high six top-10s. It appears as though Molder is beginning to figure it out. At a decent price, he's worth a shot. Molder's stats have been all over the board over the last three years, but one thing is for certain, he's not long off the tee.
Molder had a breakout season in 2009; and if not for Brian Gay's propensity to close out tournaments, he may have picked up his first PGA Tour victory. There's not enough history to select Molder with any confidence; but if you feel like gambling, he could pay off big.
