Shakes off rust at LIV Hong Kong
March 10, 2024
Kim carded a five-under 65 in the final round at LIV Golf Hong Kong. He finished the tournament at three-over for 50th place.
ANALYSIS
A snapshot of the final standings doesn't paint the entire picture of Kim's performance in Hong Kong. He started the tournament in the same way he did in Jeddah, with a six-over 76 in the first round when he scored five bogeys, one double bogey and a birdie. Kim carded a two-over 72 on Saturday, and he followed that up with his best round of the LIV Golf season thus far that included three consecutive birdies from holes 11 to 13. After a 12-year absence from professional golf, Kim seems to have that itch back and is in the field for the Asian Tour's International Series Macau tournament starting March 14.

If he can ever get healthy, Anthony Kim should easily re-enter the top 125 on the money list. That's a big if, though. Kim has dealt with several injuries the last few years and each time he's come back a little less potent. It might be best to take more time off to insure he's completely healthy, but that doesn't look like it will be the case. Kim will play on a medical extension this season, and let's just hope when he comes back, he's finally 100 percent healthy. At his price, Kim is more a why-not than a must-have. He will go late in drafts, as well.
We haven't seen the real Anthony Kim for a few years now, and let's hope he's not gone forever. Kim struggled with a thumb injury last season, yet he still managed to crack $1 million. If healthy, Kim can easily surpass $3 million and maybe even $4 million, but that's a big question. Either way, he's worth the risk. Even if he isn't 100 percent, he should top his number from last season. Kim will be tough to peg in draft leagues. There'll likely be someone who reaches for him, but if Kim is available in the third round, go and grab him.
Kim was on his way to a fabulous 2010 season when a thumb injury derailed him in early May. After a quick surgery to repair the damage, he spent the rest of the year trying to get back into form, which he never fully did. With all that happened to Kim last season, it's amazing that he finished in the top 30 on the money list. He missed a huge chunk of the season due to injury, which just goes to show how well he was playing prior to that injury. If healthy, and that's a big if because he only made two cuts post-surgery, then Kim should easily outperform his 2010 numbers. It's hard to judge Kim's stats from last year because the pre- and post-injury numbers are bunched together. What we do know is that when healthy, Kim is an excellent putter.
The singular reason for Kim being this far down on the money list was an injury he suffered early in 2009. When fully healthy, Kim is easily a top-10 player on the PGA TOUR. Look for a return to top form in 2010 and with it, a 100 percent increase from last year's $1.9 million in earnings. It's not likely that Kim will fall off many radars, but if others in your draft are not paying close attention, you should grab Kim at the end of round one or early in round two. As for salary cap leagues, he is a must-own at this price. Kim moved from 11th to 24th in the 2009 final Official World Golf Rankings.
Anthony Kim has everything that you would look for in a golfer. He's got solid mechanics, a great personality, confidence bordering on cockiness and a grasp of the situation at hand. The only problem for Kim is that Tiger Woods currently owns the PGA Tour. Look for Kim to step his game up another notch in 2009.
Kim had a very strong rookie year in 2007. He was overshadowed by some of his classmates, but he'll be taking no back seat to them in 2008. After playing nearly every event in the first six months of the 2007 season, Kim seemed to hit the wall and took a few weeks off. When he came back, he wasn't quite the same. Chalk that one up to being a rookie on the tour and not planning his schedule out properly. With a year under his belt, and a little wiser, Kim should have a great year in 2008. In early November, Kim hyperextended his ankle which has generated his withdrawal from the Nedbank Golf Challenge (South Africa) December 4-7.
