T39 in White Sulphur Springs
July 9, 2018
Barber came home with a one-under 69 in the final round of the Greenbrier Classic to finish in a tie for 39th place.
ANALYSIS
Barber got off to a three-over start through his firs six holes on Sunday, but bounced back by going bogey free the rest of the way and sinking four birdies. He drove the ball well this week, ranking T7 in fairways hit and 25th in SG: Off-the-tee. Barber just wasn't getting the putts to drop, as he finished T70 in putts per GIR and 54th in SG: Putting. He has made his last three cuts, but will need a big move at the John Deere Classic next week if he wants to have a realistic shot of making the FedExCup playoffs.

2015
Barber finished runner-up at the RSM Classic last fall and essentially coasted the rest of the season. That runner-up alone wasn't enough to secure his card for this season, but it was the major factor in him earning that card. A top-20 at the Players and a top-15 at the Barracuda Championship gave him just enough points for the upcoming season, but other than retaining his card, the season was nothing to write home about. Barber is no stranger to fighting until the end of the season for his playing privileges as he followed a similar script in 2015-16 when he finished 112th in points, but a year prior he failed to get over the hump. Bottom line is, Barber seems destined to be in this range year after year and as such, he has no value as a salary cap option.
Barber's earnings numbers are a statistical oddity over the past two season. For starters, he earned just over $200 more last season than he did the previous season. Yes, just $200 difference. The other oddity is, even though his earning's number has stayed virtually the same, his FedEx rank went from 145 in 2014-15 to 101st last season. That would indicate that he's playing better against stiffer competition. That bodes well for Barber as he's entering just his third season on the PGA Tour. Barber's upside may be limited, but he appears to be a safe pick, so he might be worth a look in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues he could go as early as the ninth round.
Barber is most known for his good sportsmanship after he disqualified himself from the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School in 2012 six days after play was completed after he was unsure he broke a rule while in a bunker (http://golfweek.com/news/2012/nov/05/blayne-barber-disqualifies-himself-six-days-after-/). The golfing gods have a way of rewarding people who do the right thing, and less than two years later, Barber is now a PGA Tour rookie. (As that Golfweek Magazine article reminds us, Chesson Hadley, who got through only because Barber DQ’d himself, was the only PGA Tour rookie to win on tour in 2013-2014. He never makes it to the Web.com Tour for 2013 if Barber doesn’t DQ himself.) This year on the Web.com Tour Barber used a win at the South Georgia Classic presented by First State Bank and Trust Company and a T3 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am Presented by SYNNEX Corporation two weeks later to help earn enough money to get his card. He finished the regular season seventh on the money list, and tacked on a T6 finish at the third Finals event to help his Reshuffle List position. With some more good fortune on his side, Barber could have a great chance to erase a lot of demons this season on the PGA Tour
