RotoWire's Preseason Outlooks

2013

After three consecutive years earning less than $1 million, Curtis was all but left for dead. His worst year of the three came in 2011 when he failed to crack $500K. This from the former Open Champion who had several titles under his belt. Curtis was never one who could be trusted, though. He went through a major slump after his Open win and finally broke it with, not one, but two wins in one season. He maintained a fairly high level of play until 2009 when he hit a major rut. Now it looks like he's out of his funk once again. But can you really trust a guy who's been known to disappear for years at a time? He's simply too risky at this price in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues, he's probably a fourth- or fifth-round pick.

2011

Curtis's PGA TOUR career has been quite the roller coaster. He went from an overachiever to an underachiever to an overachiever and once again back to an underachiever. This all started with a win at the British Open as a complete unknown. The years that followed were tough as Curtis struggled to live up to the reputation as a major champion. He finally got it together again in 2006 when he captured two PGA TOUR victories, but the last two years he's reverted to his post-major form. Curtis certainly has plenty of talent, and considering he's only 33, he should have enough time to make yet another comeback. Curtis is consistently accurate off the tee, but beyond that, his stats are pretty weak.

2010

In only a few years on the PGA TOUR, Ben Curtis has been all over the map in terms of his skills. Curtis is streaky, which makes it hard to predict how much success he will have this season; but the good news is that he due for a good year after struggling in 2009. While some fluctuation is expected from the players on the PGA TOUR, Curtis has gone to extremes the last four years. He's earned over $2 million in two separate seasons but also finished under $1 million in two others. Curtis should have a strong 2009 season, but don't bank on him topping the $2-million mark again in 2010. Curtis moved from 24th to 50th in the 2009 final Official World Golf Rankings.

2009

Ben Curtis remains a mystery. His lack of consistency makes us wonder how good he really is. Curtis has plenty of talent, but there's something keeping him from taking his game to the next level. His 2008 number is pretty lofty, so I would pass in a salary cap league.

2007

After years of bashing Curtis, he finally shut our mouths in 2006. With two wins in 2006 it's easy to see that this kid can play. The problem is he's not showing any consistency. If he can win twice each year, then who cares, no need to be consistent. But it's highly unlikely that he pulls off multiple wins again in 2007.

2005

It's starting to look more and more like the 2003 British Open win was a fluke. Don't expect big things from Curtis in 2005.
