Sutherland comes and goes.
ANALYSIS
Sutherland was an alternate for this week's Puerto Rico Open, and he gained entry into the field on Monday. By Monday evening, he was gone from the field. Sutherland hasn't played in a PGA Tour event since missing the cut in the Reno-Tahoe Open last August. He likely is gearing toward the Champions Tour, for which he becomes eligible on July 4.

You aren't going to break the bank with Sutherland, as his best days are behind him, but he'll get a shot early on to grab a card for the season as he was forced out of action due to a neck injury last year. He'll have 15 events to earn $378,473, reaching No. 125 from the 2011 money list. If he does, he's eligible to play the remainder of the season. Check his health status before making this pick, but even if he's not ready to go right away, he's still probably worth a pick.
Sutherland earned two runner-up finishes in 2008 on his way past $2 million in earnings, but as we get farther away from that season, it appears as though that season was a bit of a fluke. Sutherland is still a good player who's likely to reach $1 million every year, but the chances of earning much more are minimal at best. Sutherland ranked second in GIR on the PGA TOUR last season.
Sutherland earned more than $2.5 million in 2008, but that was probably his peak performance level. Still, Sutherland earned just over $1.2 million in 2009, which is right about where you can expect him to finish this season. Sutherland is certainly not the flashiest player on Tour, so though he won't be a very trendy pick, he could turn into a decent bottom-of-the-roster option on your team.
Sutherland played well last year, but he used a couple events in the fall to crack the top-20 on the money list. Unfortunately for anyone who thought about selecting him this year, he inflated his number to a point where you can't justify doing so.
Sutherland found the magic three times last season. The first was at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he finished runner-up. The second, was at the John Deere Classic where he finished sixth, and the third was the PGA Championship where he finished ninth. Other than those three events, Sutherland didn't get much done. Sutherland played a little above his head last year and should come back to Earth a bit in 2008.
In 2005, Sutherland earned three top-10s in his first seven events. From that point, he's now gone 48 events without a top-10. Not a good sign for 2007.
It's evident that Sutherland's better seasons are in his rear-view mirror. That said, if you do draft him don't expect much. We'll go out on a short limb and say he doesn't break $600K in '05.
Sutherland did no better than 9th during the regular season last year, and we're not sure you can expect anymore from him this year. Sutherland was on the map by winning the WGC Match Play a couple years back, but really hasn't done much since.
