Mair had four points in 65 NHL games with New Jersey during the 2010-11 season. As of press time, he did not have an NHL contract.
Mair was invited to training camp and, as of opening day, was not signed. The Devils like his leadership and the grit he can provide. He'll have more value to the Devils than to your roster.
Mair enters 2009-10 recovering from hip surgery which is expected to sideline the 10-year veteran for the first couple weeks of the season. The surgery could pose a potential threat on his physical style of play as well as his role on the team. For a player whose fantasy value relies on penalty minutes, fantasy owners may want to hold off on this enforcer.
Mair totaled 17 points (5G, 12A) and 66 penalty minutes last season. He mixed things up a lot less than in the past, compiling a PIM total that was less than half of his career high. Mair is a fourth-liner and he will turn 30 in February. He looks to be mellowing with age.
Mair was known almost exclusively as an enforcer until late last season. From Feb. 20 through the end of the playoffs, he scored 12 of his 16 points, as injuries opened the door to increased offensive chances. Mair is most valuable for his penalty minutes (he racked up a team-high 128 last year), but he has the ability to chip in a few more points than the average enforcer.
Mair should be able to return from a wicked concussion in 2006-07, but still will not be much of a fantasy force. He is the Sabres' third or fourth line center and has a career high of 20 points. He's good for penalty minutes and that's about it.
Mair is one of Buffalo's few sources of toughness, as he picked up 146 penalty minutes last campaign (for the second year in a row) as a fourth-line mucker. Coach Lindy Ruff likes those type of players, so there's a good chance he'll have the same exact role for the 2005-06 season.
