Roy was not brought to Calgary for his scoring, as he has 65 career points in 471 games. WIth the loss of Eric Godard, the Flames needed a bruiser and got one in Roy, as he has averaged more than 100 penalty minutes a year in his NHL career.
Roy's role as Mr. Muscle could be taken by defenseman Shane O'Brien. And that means Roy will struggle to find a niche in Tampa Bay. His only value lies with PIMs; look elsewhere this time around.
Roy is an expensive goon who can be counting on to do little more than fight -- not that that's a bad thing. Roy signed a three-year, $3 million deal when the Pens went on a free agent splurge that many thought might send them to the Stanley Cup finals. Roy is likely to accumulate somewhere between 100 and 150 penalty minutes over the course of a full season.
Roy, who topped out with 211 PIM in 2001-02, will assume the role of primary defender of Mario Lemieux and company. He could potentially pass his season high in penalty minutes. Roy has never scored more than 17 points in a season.
